Veeam in Morocco: reseller, editions and Microsoft 365 backup, the buying guide

The short answer: with Veeam, you don’t buy “a Veeam licence”, you buy two separate things. On one side, Veeam Data Platform for your virtual machines, physical servers, workstations and file shares, licensed per protected workload, in four editions (Essentials, Foundation, Advanced, Premium). On the other, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 for mail, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams, licensed per user. Add immutable backup storage, choose between subscription and perpetual, note the renewal date, and have everything quoted by a partner that deploys and monitors.

This buying guide helps you avoid the most common quoting mistakes. For edition details, see Veeam Data Platform: which edition to choose; for settings after purchase, the six Veeam settings that make real protection.

At ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS, a Veeam partner in Morocco, we supply licences to businesses, with or without installation, from Casablanca. The licensing rules quoted here come from the licensing policy and product pages published by Veeam. We do not give prices: they depend on term, volume and current conditions.

Which Veeam product for which need

What you want to protect Veeam product Licence unit
VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox VE virtual machines Veeam Data Platform (Veeam Backup & Replication) 1 licence per VM
Physical Windows or Linux servers Veeam Data Platform (Veeam agents) 1 licence per server
Workstations and laptops Veeam Data Platform (Veeam agents) 1 licence per 3 workstations
File shares, NAS, object storage Veeam Data Platform 1 licence per 500 GB
Entra ID directory Veeam Data Platform 1 licence per 10 users
Mail, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 Per user
Very small estate, no support needed Community Edition Free, 10 workloads at most

These units are those of the Veeam Universal License, as Veeam describes it in its licensing policy. The licence is portable: a VM that moves from one hypervisor to another keeps its licence, which matters when you migrate from VMware to Proxmox.

Step 1: count your workloads, not your servers

The most frequent mistake on a Veeam quote is counting physical servers when Veeam counts protected workloads. A host running eight VMs is eight licences, not one. Conversely, three workstations consume only one licence.

Take inventory in this order:

  1. The VMs on each host, including the forgotten ones: secondary domain controller, print server, a test VM that became essential.
  2. Physical servers that are not virtualised: old file server, line-of-business application server, a PC used as a server.
  3. Workstations to protect: management, accounting, laptops of mobile staff.
  4. File volume on NAS devices and shares, in terabytes.
  5. Microsoft 365, separately: the number of users with a mailbox.

Veeam sells Foundation, Advanced and Premium in packs of 10 licences: the total rounds up to the next pack. For a very small business, the Essentials edition is sold in packs of 5 licences, capped at 50.

Step 2: choose the Veeam Data Platform edition

The editions are nested: each includes everything in the previous one.

Edition For whom What it brings
Essentials Small businesses that will stay under the 50-licence cap The core backup and restore, with support
Foundation Most SMBs Backup and restore of every workload, instant recovery, hardened appliance, malware detection
Advanced Businesses exposed to ransomware that want to analyse before restoring Proactive threat detection, SIEM integration, observability
Premium Organisations that must prove their recovery plan Orchestrated recovery, validation testing, compliance reports

Our field view: Foundation is enough in most cases, provided it is configured properly. An immutable copy and regular restore tests protect more than a higher edition badly configured. The full feature-by-feature comparison is in our guide to Veeam Data Platform editions.

What about Community Edition? Veeam offers it free for up to 10 workloads, including Proxmox VE, VMware, Hyper-V, Windows and Linux servers, laptops and NAS. It suits a very small estate, but the Veeam licensing policy states it comes without a support commitment, one installation per infrastructure, and cannot be mixed with a paid installation. For a business that depends on its data, that last point is usually enough to rule it out.

Step 3: Microsoft 365, a separate line

This is the second classic trap: believing that Microsoft backs up your data, or that the Veeam Data Platform licence covers Microsoft 365. Neither is true. Microsoft guarantees service availability, not the recovery of what you deleted, what was encrypted or what was lost when an employee left: we explain it in Microsoft does not back up your mail.

According to Veeam, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 backs up Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams and Entra ID. The licence is counted per user account, with a minimum of 10 users; shared, resource and group mailboxes do not consume a licence.

Three ways to use it, according to Veeam:

Mode Who runs the infrastructure Where backups are stored
Self-managed software You or your provider Storage of your choice, on-premises or cloud object
Veeam Data Cloud Veeam, as a SaaS service An Azure region you choose, with service-level immutability
Service provider A Veeam Cloud & Service Provider partner The provider’s storage

The choice depends on two questions: do you want to run one more backup server and storage, and where must your data reside? For a business subject to data location requirements, the question also arises under Moroccan law 09-08 and the CNDP. If you do not have your Microsoft licences yet, our guide to buying Microsoft 365 in Morocco helps you pick the right plan.

Step 4: plan the storage, often missing from the quote

Veeam is software. It needs somewhere to write backups, and that is the line most often missing from the quote:

  • A local repository for fast restores: a backup server with disks, or a suitable NAS.
  • An immutable copy that nobody can erase during the retention period, even with a stolen administrator account. Veeam offers the Linux hardened repository or object storage with object lock for this.
  • An off-site copy, in another building or in the cloud. This is the 3-2-1 rule with an immutable copy, and our article on off-site backup in Morocco details the hosting options.

An undersized backup server lengthens backup windows and restores. Sizing is based on the actual volume, expected growth and the retention you want, not on a general rule.

Step 5: subscription or perpetual, and the renewal date

Veeam now prioritises the Veeam Universal License and has stopped selling new perpetual per-CPU-socket licences. Two models remain common:

Model What you buy What must be renewed
Subscription The right to use the latest version for the term purchased, Production support included The whole subscription, at the list price in effect at renewal
Perpetual The right to use indefinitely the versions released before support ends, with a first year of support Support, every year, to keep updates and assistance

In both cases, the renewal date must be tracked. Veeam states that support may be refused for an expired licence or maintenance agreement, and charges a reinstatement fee for late renewals. A Veeam server that is no longer updated is also a component accumulating known vulnerabilities, while it holds a copy of all your data.

Buying Veeam in Morocco: the partner’s role

The channel. Veeam licences reach Morocco through distributors, who sell to partner resellers and integrators. Going through a partner that deploys Veeam every day gives you an accurate licence count, the right edition and a single point of contact for licence, installation and support.

What a good partner checks before selling you a licence:

  • the real workload inventory, VM by VM;
  • the split between Microsoft 365 and Data Platform;
  • storage, immutability and the off-site copy;
  • your recovery objectives (RTO and RPO) per application, which belong in your disaster recovery plan;
  • the subscription or support end date of existing licences.

What happens after the purchase. A Veeam licence protects nothing until jobs are configured, monitored and tested. Alerts must be read, and a restore must be tried regularly: our method is described in testing a backup restore.

The buying mistakes we see most

  1. Counting physical hosts instead of protected VMs.
  2. Forgetting workstations, NAS devices or physical servers left outside virtualisation.
  3. Assuming Microsoft 365 is included in Veeam Data Platform.
  4. Buying the licence without planning storage or the immutable copy.
  5. Choosing Essentials for an estate that will exceed the 50-licence cap.
  6. Choosing Premium and never configuring orchestration or testing.
  7. Letting the subscription or support expire without noticing.

Checklist before requesting a Veeam quote

  • List of VMs per host and per hypervisor.
  • Physical servers, workstations and file volumes to protect.
  • Number of Microsoft 365 users with a mailbox.
  • Preferred mode for Microsoft 365: self-managed, Veeam Data Cloud or service provider.
  • Existing storage, immutable copy and off-site location planned.
  • Recovery objectives for critical applications.
  • Veeam licences already in place and their end dates.
  • Need for threat detection or compliance reports.

How we work

We start with a free initial audit of your backups: workload inventory, existing licences, storage, off-site copies and the latest restore tests. Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy Veeam licences in Morocco?

From a Veeam partner that supplies licences to businesses, with or without installation. ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS, a Veeam partner in Casablanca, supplies Veeam Data Platform and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 licences to businesses and can deploy them. We are not a distributor and do not sell to resellers.

Does Veeam Data Platform back up Microsoft 365?

No. According to the Veeam licensing policy, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 is a separate offering, purchased and licensed separately. Veeam Data Platform licences cannot be used to protect Microsoft 365.

How is a Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 licence counted?

Per user account, with a minimum of 10 users according to the Veeam licensing policy. Shared, resource and group mailboxes, as well as external SharePoint users, do not require a licence.

Is there a free version of Veeam?

Yes: Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition protects up to 10 workloads, according to Veeam. It is limited to your own environment, provided without a support commitment, and cannot be mixed with a paid installation on the same infrastructure.

What happens if we forget to renew Veeam?

An expired subscription only gives the right to use the software for the term purchased; a perpetual licence keeps working, but without updates or support. Veeam states that support may be refused for an expired licence and charges a reinstatement fee for late renewals.
