Veeam Data Platform: Foundation, Advanced or Premium, which edition should you choose?
Veeam licensing in Morocco: what Foundation, Advanced and Premium include, how Veeam Universal License is counted, and which edition suits an SMB.

For most SMBs, Veeam Data Platform Foundation is enough: it covers backup and recovery for all your virtual machines, physical servers, workstations and file shares. Advanced makes sense when you want to detect threats proactively and analyse the health of your backup environment. Premium is for organisations that must orchestrate and prove their disaster recovery plan. All editions are licensed the same way, per protected workload. Here is how to choose without paying for features you will not use, from the Veeam partner that deploys these licences in Morocco.
One note before we start: we do not quote prices here. They depend on term, volume and purchasing channel, and they change. This guide covers the content of each edition as Veeam publishes it on its website.
The three editions in one sentence each
Veeam offers Veeam Data Platform in three editions, each including everything in the previous one:
- Foundation: backup and recovery for every workload.
- Advanced: adds proactive monitoring, analytics and threat insights.
- Premium: adds orchestrated recovery and full cyber resilience, with compliance and audit reporting.
What each edition includes
Here is the comparison table published by Veeam, grouped for readability:
| Capability (from Veeam’s comparison) | Foundation | Advanced | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zero trust data resilience | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Instant, verified recovery | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Breadth of hypervisor support | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Continuous data protection (CDP) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Hardened software appliance and components | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| AI-powered malware detection | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Proactive threat detection: YARA scans, Veeam Threat Hunter, IOC tools scanner, SIEM/SOAR integrations, Veeam Threat Center, Recon | No | Yes | Yes |
| Observability and AI: trends, decision support, analysis agents | No | Yes | Yes |
| Orchestrated recovery | No | No | Yes |
| Validation testing | No | No | Yes |
| GRC audit reporting and compliance documentation | No | No | Yes |
| Veeam Vault secure cloud storage | Add-on | Add-on | Add-on |
Orchestrated recovery relies on Veeam Recovery Orchestrator. According to Veeam’s licensing policy, it is included in Premium, can be added to Advanced, but is not available as an add-on for Foundation or Essentials.
Understanding the Veeam Universal License
Veeam Data Platform is licensed with the Veeam Universal License, which Veeam describes as a portable, workload-based licence that protects virtual, physical and cloud workloads interchangeably. In practice, according to Veeam’s published licensing policy, one licence covers:
| Protected workload | One licence covers |
|---|---|
| Virtual machine or cloud VM | 1 machine |
| Server or application server | 1 server |
| Workstation or endpoint | 3 devices |
| Unstructured data (NAS, object storage, shares) | 500 GB |
| Entra ID identity | 10 users |
Foundation, Advanced and Premium are sold in packs of 10 licences, as subscription, perpetual or rental. They deploy as the Veeam software appliance or as Windows-installable software. Veeam states that its licences are transferable across locations and platforms: valuable for a company migrating from VMware to Proxmox, since the migrated VM keeps using the same licence.
Two points often trip up quotes:
- Microsoft 365 is not included. Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 is a separate offering with its own licence. Veeam Data Platform licences cannot be used to protect Microsoft 365, and vice versa. Our article on Microsoft 365 backup explains why it is still needed.
- Large file volumes. For very large NAS or object storage volumes, Veeam offers per-terabyte licences called Capacity Packs. When present, they cover all unstructured data instead of universal licences.
What about Veeam Data Platform Essentials?
Veeam reserves an Essentials offering for small businesses: packs of 5 licences, 50 licences at most. It cannot be merged with other licences to exceed that cap; going further requires an upgrade SKU. For a small organisation whose estate will stay below that threshold, it is worth considering; for a growing company, plan the move to a standard edition early.
Which edition for which company
| Edition | Who it is for | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Most SMBs: backup and recovery of VMs, servers, workstations and files | The base: instant verified recovery, CDP, hardened appliance, AI-powered malware detection |
| Advanced | Companies exposed to ransomware that want to detect and analyse before restoring | Proactive threat detection (YARA, Threat Hunter, IOC scanner, SIEM/SOAR) and observability |
| Premium | Organisations with compliance requirements or a documented DR plan | Orchestrated recovery, validation testing, GRC audit reporting and compliance documentation |
Our view from the field:
- Foundation fits when the goal is solid, immutable, tested backup. Good settings then matter more than the edition: see our six Veeam settings.
- Advanced becomes relevant when you want to know whether a backup is clean before restoring it after an attack, or to connect Veeam to a security monitoring tool.
- Premium is justified when a regulator, auditor or management asks you to prove the recovery plan works, with regular tests and reports. Our guide on business continuity vs disaster recovery plans helps frame that need.
How to choose
- Count the workloads actually protected: VMs, physical servers, workstations, file volume, Entra ID users.
- Separate Microsoft 365 and other standalone offerings in the quote.
- Set recovery objectives (RTO and RPO) per application.
- Assess ransomware exposure and your ability to analyse a security alert.
- Check compliance obligations: audits, proof of recovery tests.
- Choose the simplest edition that meets these needs, allowing for growth.
Common mistakes
- Buying Premium “to be safe” without ever configuring orchestration or tests.
- Counting licences by physical hosts instead of protected VMs.
- Forgetting workstations or file shares in the count.
- Assuming Microsoft 365 is covered by the Veeam Data Platform licence.
- Choosing Essentials, then exceeding the cap a year later.
- Letting the subscription lapse and losing support and updates.
- Paying for a higher edition when the real problem is the lack of an immutable copy or restore tests.
Checklist before ordering
- Workload inventory: VMs, servers, workstations, file volume, Entra ID users.
- Licence count calculated using Veeam’s rules, rounded up to the pack.
- Microsoft 365 handled by a separate offering.
- RTO and RPO set for critical applications.
- Need for proactive threat detection assessed.
- Need for orchestration and compliance reporting assessed.
- Licence type chosen, subscription or perpetual, and renewal date recorded.
- Immutable repository and off-site copy planned, whatever the edition.
How we do it
We start from an inventory of your workloads and recovery objectives, calculate the exact licence count and recommend the simplest edition that covers your needs. We then deploy Veeam with an immutable repository, off-site copy and scheduled restore tests, and bring it into our 24/7 monitoring. All of this sits within our backup and business continuity offer, with case studies that illustrate the approach.

Frequently asked questions
How is a Veeam Universal License counted?
According to Veeam’s licensing policy, one licence covers one virtual machine or cloud VM, one server, three workstations, 500 GB of unstructured data or ten Entra ID users. The Foundation, Advanced and Premium editions are sold in packs of 10 licences.
Does the Veeam Data Platform licence cover Microsoft 365?
No. Veeam states that Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, Veeam Backup for Salesforce and Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes are standalone offerings, purchased and licensed separately. Veeam Data Platform licences cannot be used for these products.
What is Veeam Data Platform Essentials?
It is an offering Veeam reserves for small businesses: sold in packs of 5 licences, up to a maximum of 50. It cannot be merged with other licences to go beyond that cap; growing past it requires an upgrade SKU.
Can we change platform without buying new Veeam licences?
Yes, that is the point of the Veeam Universal License: Veeam describes it as portable and workload-based, usable interchangeably for virtual, physical or cloud workloads. A VM migrated from VMware to Proxmox keeps consuming the same licence.
