Proxmox in Morocco: integrator, support subscriptions and installation
Proxmox in Morocco: Community, Basic, Standard or Premium, Enterprise repository, per-socket licensing, hardware requirements, installation and the local integrator.

The short answer: Proxmox VE can be downloaded and used free of charge, with every feature. What you pay for is the yearly subscription, counted per occupied CPU socket. It opens the Enterprise repository, the update channel Proxmox recommends for production, and depending on the level (Basic, Standard, Premium), tickets with the vendor. For a Moroccan SMB, the right setup almost always combines a suitable subscription with a local integrator who installs, monitors and intervenes in French, in your time zone.
At ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS, we are a Proxmox partner in Casablanca. We design and maintain Proxmox VE and Proxmox Backup Server platforms, and we supply subscriptions and hardware, with or without installation. All technical data in this guide comes from Proxmox’s official pages; we do not quote prices, which are published by the vendor and change over time.
Proxmox VE in brief
Proxmox VE is an open-source virtualisation platform developed by Proxmox Server Solutions in Vienna. It brings together in a single web interface:
- KVM virtual machines and LXC containers;
- clustering and high availability, with live migration between servers;
- storage: local (ZFS, LVM), shared (iSCSI, Fibre Channel, NFS) or distributed with Ceph;
- virtual networking (SDN) and a built-in firewall;
- backup, natively with Proxmox Backup Server or with Veeam.
The code is released under the AGPLv3 licence. No feature is locked without a subscription: that is the big difference with the per-feature licensing many companies experienced with VMware. If you are leaving VMware, our guide to migrating from VMware to Proxmox details the method.
The current version is Proxmox VE 9, based on Debian 13 “Trixie”. Proxmox VE 8 has been end of life since August 2026, according to the official FAQ: a server still on version 8 no longer receives fixes and must be upgraded.
Enterprise or no-subscription repository: what really changes
Proxmox distributes updates through several repositories:
| Repository | Access | Use recommended by Proxmox |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise | Subscription key required | Production: most tested and validated packages |
| No-subscription | Open | Testing and non-production environments |
| Test | Open | Trying new features, never in production |
The Enterprise repository is enabled by default at installation. Without a key, the first update fails, and many installers then switch to the no-subscription repository without weighing the consequences. Packages there go through Proxmox’s test lab, but they do not get the additional validation reserved for the Enterprise repository.
Our position is simple: a server running the company’s ERP, email or file shares belongs on the Enterprise repository. The no-subscription repository has its place on a lab, a proof of concept or a test server.
The four Proxmox VE subscription levels
A Proxmox VE subscription lasts one year from purchase. It is counted per occupied physical CPU socket: a dual-processor server needs two sockets covered. All nodes in a cluster must use the same subscription level.
| Level | Enterprise repository | Vendor support tickets | First response time (critical incident) | Remote support via SSH | Offline updates |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Community | Yes | None (public forum) | Not applicable | No | No |
| Basic | Yes | 3 per year | 1 business day | No | No |
| Standard | Yes | 10 per year | 4 hours | Yes | Yes |
| Premium | Yes | Unlimited | 2 hours | Yes | Yes |
Source: the vendor’s Proxmox VE pricing page. Response times are guaranteed first responses for critical requests submitted through the Proxmox Customer Portal, during the hours covered by the chosen level.
An important point for Morocco: for regions outside North America and Asia-Pacific, Proxmox states support from Monday to Friday, 7:00 to 17:00 Central European Time, on Austrian business days. 24/7 support is announced for Premium from 19 October 2026, and for Standard by the end of 2026. The page also notes that qualified resellers can provide local purchasing, consulting, implementation and support, in other time zones and languages.
Proxmox Backup Server: a separate subscription
Proxmox Backup Server (PBS), the vendor’s backup solution, has its own table. The subscription is counted per backup server, not per socket:
| PBS level | Tickets per year | First response (critical incident) |
|---|---|---|
| Community | None | Not applicable |
| Basic | 5 | 1 business day |
| Standard | 15 | 4 hours |
| Premium | Unlimited | 2 hours |
The same reasoning applies: a production backup server deserves the Enterprise repository. We often combine PBS for fast on-site backups with an immutable off-site copy, following the approach described in the 3-2-1 rule and immutable backup. When Veeam already protects the rest of the estate, it also supports Proxmox VE, see our Veeam best practices for virtual machines.
Which level for a Moroccan SMB
| Situation | Level we recommend |
|---|---|
| Lab, proof of concept, test server | No subscription, no-subscription repository |
| Single server or small cluster, monitored and maintained by an integrator | Community, for the Enterprise repository |
| Production without an in-house Linux team, occasional need to reach the vendor | Basic |
| Cluster with Ceph, critical applications, internal team that escalates | Standard |
| Business that cannot stop, hosting for third parties | Premium |
The Community level is often underestimated: it gives exactly the same Enterprise repository as Premium. The difference is direct access to the vendor. If your integrator knows Proxmox, monitors your servers and responds quickly, Community or Basic is enough for most SMBs. Standard and Premium make sense when the internal team wants direct access to Proxmox engineers, or when the architecture (Ceph, many nodes) makes every incident more complex.
Remember the cluster rule: same level on every node. It is better to choose the level at design time than to adjust it server by server.
Hardware requirements to respect
Proxmox publishes precise recommendations for production:
- Processor: 64-bit Intel or AMD with Intel VT or AMD-V virtualisation extensions (VT-d or AMD-Vi for PCIe passthrough).
- Memory: at least 2 GB for the operating system and Proxmox services, plus memory for the virtual machines. With ZFS or Ceph, allow about 1 GB of RAM per TB of used storage.
- Storage: fast and redundant, ideally SSD: hardware RAID with battery-protected write cache, or non-RAID disks for ZFS.
- Network: redundant Gigabit NICs, and more NICs depending on storage and cluster design; 10 Gbit and above is supported.
The most common trap: Proxmox states that neither ZFS nor Ceph is compatible with a hardware RAID controller. A server ordered with a classic RAID controller must be set to HBA mode, or fitted with a suitable controller, before installing ZFS or Ceph. We check this before any order, as explained in which server for a small business in Morocco. For a cluster, network sizing and quorum are covered in Proxmox and Ceph high availability.
Installation, step by step
A clean Proxmox VE installation is more than booting the ISO image. Here is the sequence we follow:
- Inventory and sizing: machines to host, memory, disks, growth, criticality of each service.
- Storage choice: local ZFS, existing SAN in shared LVM, or Ceph for a cluster of at least three nodes.
- Hardware preparation: up-to-date firmware, virtualisation enabled in the BIOS, controller in HBA mode if needed.
- Installation and repositories: Proxmox VE 9, subscription key, Enterprise repository, updates applied before going live.
- Network: separate networks for management, cluster, storage and virtual machines, with bonded and redundant links.
- Security: named accounts, two-factor authentication, management interface never exposed to the internet, VPN access, built-in firewall enabled.
- Backup: Proxmox Backup Server or Veeam, off-site copy, first restore test before going live.
- Monitoring and documentation: alerts on disks, memory, cluster and backups, written recovery procedure.
What a local integrator brings
The vendor answers tickets; it does not step into your server room or onto your network. A Proxmox integrator in Morocco covers the rest:
| Need | Proxmox vendor (depending on subscription) | Local integrator |
|---|---|---|
| Tested updates (Enterprise repository) | Yes | Applies them and schedules reboots |
| Software bug analysis | Yes, via ticket | Prepares the ticket, applies the fix |
| Architecture design | No | Yes |
| On-site work (disk, card, cabling) | No | Yes, from Casablanca |
| Server and backup monitoring | No | Yes, 24/7 |
| French-speaking support in Moroccan hours | No | Yes |
| Hardware and subscription supply | Subscriptions only | Both |
This is the role we play in our Proxmox virtualisation in Morocco offering: design, installation, migration, backup and maintenance. To compare with the other major open-source alternative, also read XCP-ng and Xen Orchestra.
Mistakes we fix on Proxmox servers
- Production on the no-subscription repository, or worse, no updates since installation.
- Servers left on Proxmox VE 8 after its August 2026 end of life.
- ZFS installed on a hardware RAID controller, with degraded performance and reliability.
- Different subscription levels across nodes of the same cluster.
- A two-node cluster with no quorum tie-breaker: losing one server blocks the other.
- Web interface published on the internet instead of VPN access.
- Backups on the same server as the machines they protect, never tested.
Checklist before ordering
- List of virtual machines to host, with memory, disks and criticality.
- Number of servers and CPU sockets, to calculate subscriptions.
- Storage choice: ZFS, existing SAN or Ceph, and a compatible controller.
- Same subscription level on all nodes, chosen according to how much vendor access you need.
- Separate backup server and off-site copy.
- Network: redundant NICs, dedicated VLANs, management access via VPN.
- Maintenance contract: monitoring, updates, response time.
How we do it
We start with a free initial audit of your infrastructure: servers, storage, network, backups and existing licences. We then propose a Proxmox architecture sized to your usage, with the right subscription level, and supply servers, disks and subscriptions. Installation follows the method above, with a tested backup before going live. Once in service, your Proxmox servers are monitored 24/7 and a critical incident is handled in under 15 minutes. If you prefer to delegate your whole estate, our managed IT services in Morocco include this follow-up.
See our capabilities on the Proxmox partner page and our case studies, then request your free initial audit: we reply within 24 business hours with a costed recommendation.
Frequently asked questions
Is Proxmox VE really free?
Yes. Proxmox VE code is released under the AGPLv3 licence and every feature is available without a subscription: clusters, high availability, Ceph, backup. The subscription gives access to the Enterprise repository, the most tested one, and depending on the level, to support tickets with the vendor.
How many subscriptions does a Proxmox cluster need?
One subscription per occupied physical CPU socket, on each server. A dual-processor server therefore needs two sockets covered. Proxmox also requires all nodes of a cluster to use the same subscription level. Proxmox Backup Server is subscribed per backup server instead.
What is the difference between Community and Basic?
Both give access to the Enterprise repository. Community includes no tickets with the Proxmox support team: help comes from the public forum or your integrator. Basic adds 3 tickets per year with a one-business-day response, according to the table published by Proxmox.
Is Proxmox support available during Moroccan business hours?
For regions outside North America and Asia-Pacific, Proxmox states support from Monday to Friday, 7:00 to 17:00 Central European Time, on Austrian business days. 24/7 support is announced for Premium from 19 October 2026 and for Standard by the end of 2026. A local integrator covers the rest, in French.
Is Proxmox VE 8 still supported?
No. According to the official FAQ, Proxmox VE 8, based on Debian 12, reached end of life in August 2026. Servers still on version 8 must move to Proxmox VE 9, based on Debian 13, upgrading Ceph first if the cluster uses it.
