Small business server in Morocco: Dell PowerEdge or HPE ProLiant, which model?

Your server is several years old, the disks are noisy, the warranty has expired, and you have two quotes on the table: a Dell PowerEdge and an HPE ProLiant. The part numbers look nothing alike, there are dozens of options, and it is hard to tell whether you are comparing like with like. The short answer: for an SMB, both vendors are equally good. What makes a good server is a model chosen for what it must run, with disks in RAID, dual power supplies, a UPS and an on-site warranty that actually covers your city. Here is our method for choosing a business server in Morocco, without paying for power you do not need or getting stuck after two years.

One useful clarification: ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS is not an official Dell or HPE partner. We supply, install and support both brands, which lets us recommend either one without bias.

Start from the workload, not the datasheet

A server is sized from what it will do. Before comparing part numbers, list:

  • The roles: domain controller, file sharing, accounting or payroll software, database, line-of-business application, telephony, video surveillance.
  • Virtualisation: a single operating system installed directly on the hardware, or several virtual machines on a hypervisor such as Proxmox VE or Hyper-V.
  • Data volume today and its likely growth, including archives and local backups.
  • Criticality: how long can the business stop if the server goes down?

A file server for a few PCs has nothing in common with a virtualisation host running internal email, the ERP and the domain controller. Sizing mistakes almost always come from a poorly described workload at the start.

Tower or rack: the room decides

Criterion Tower server Rack server
Location Office, room without a cabinet 19-inch server cabinet
Noise Usually quieter Louder fans, keep away from offices
Expandability Good on mid-range towers Good, with rails and clean cabling
Operations Simple on a small site Tidier once there is a firewall, switches and a UPS
Typical case Small practice, branch office Head office, server room, several devices

A tower is not a “small server”: some dual-processor towers take a lot of disks and memory. The choice is mostly about the room. If you install a cabinet, use it to group the firewall, switches and UPS, as described in our network infrastructure offering.

Current entry ranges at Dell and HPE

The models below are listed today on the vendors’ websites. Ranges change regularly: always check the generation quoted.

Use Dell PowerEdge HPE ProLiant
Entry tower, one processor T160 (3U), T360 (4.5U) MicroServer Gen11, ML30 Gen11
Expandable tower T560 (up to two processors) ML110 Gen11 (one processor, more expandable)
Entry rack, one processor R260, R360 (1U) DL20 Gen11 (1U, short depth)
Rack for virtualisation R470 (1U), R570 (2U), Xeon 6 DL320 Gen12 (1U, Xeon 6)

Entry models (T160, T360, R360, ML30, DL20) use Xeon E or entry-level Xeon 6 processors and UDIMM memory, with a limited number of slots. They are well suited to a file server, a domain controller or two to three light virtual machines. For a virtualisation host that must run several critical servers and grow for five years, move to a model designed for it: R470, R570 or T560 at Dell, ML110 or DL320 at HPE.

Both brands include a remote management card: iDRAC at Dell, iLO at HPE. It lets you restart, reinstall and monitor the hardware even when the operating system no longer responds. Make sure it is cabled to a separate management network and never exposed to the internet.

Memory and disks for Proxmox or Hyper-V

Memory

In virtualisation, memory is almost always the first thing to run out. Add up the memory of each planned virtual machine, add the hypervisor’s own needs, then leave room for new VMs in the coming years. Choose high-capacity modules to keep slots free: filling every slot with small modules means replacing them all to grow.

Disks and RAID

  • SSDs for virtual machines: databases and business applications are sensitive to access times. Spinning disks remain relevant for large archive volumes.
  • RAID 1 or RAID 10 for VMs, RAID 6 for a large file volume. RAID protects against a disk failure, not against deletion or ransomware: it never replaces a backup.
  • Hot-swap disks: a failed disk is replaced without shutting the server down.
  • Proxmox with ZFS: the Proxmox documentation advises against running ZFS on top of a hardware RAID controller. Plan for a controller in HBA (passthrough) mode or directly attached disks. For Hyper-V, a hardware RAID controller (PERC at Dell, MR at HPE) remains the classic choice.
  • Separate boot disk: a small mirror dedicated to booting the hypervisor (BOSS at Dell, M.2 kit at HPE depending on the model) makes reinstallation simpler.

For the architecture side, see our guide to Proxmox and Ceph high availability and our Proxmox and Veeam virtualisation offering, as a Proxmox partner.

Redundant power and UPS

Entry models often ship with a single, non-redundant power supply. Most accept a second hot-swappable unit (1+1) as an option: this is the case for the R360 and T360 at Dell and the ML30 Gen11 at HPE, with dedicated units. Check that redundancy is actually included in the quote, not just possible.

Then connect the server to a UPS sized for the cabinet’s real load, with software or a network card that triggers a clean shutdown of the virtual machines before the battery runs out. Test this scenario at least once: a UPS that cuts the server abruptly only solves half the problem.

On-site warranty: the real criterion in Morocco

A failed server with no replacement part means a business at a standstill. Both vendors let you extend the base warranty:

  • Dell: ProSupport for Infrastructure and ProSupport Plus for Infrastructure, with next-business-day or four-hour on-site response depending on the level, and ProSupport Mission Critical for the most sensitive systems.
  • HPE: HPE Tech Care, in Basic, Essential and Critical levels, sold as a Care Pack, at purchase or as a post-warranty extension.

The deciding point: on-site availability depends on your location. Ask your supplier to confirm in writing the service level that actually applies at the server’s address, in Casablanca as in the regions, and record the warranty end date in your inventory.

The mistakes we see most

  1. An entry-level server bought for virtualisation, out of memory after two years, with no free slot.
  2. A single power supply and no UPS: the first power cut corrupts a database.
  3. RAID 5 on large spinning disks to host virtual machines.
  4. An iDRAC or iLO card never configured, or exposed to the internet with the factory password.
  5. An “on-site” warranty that does not cover the city where the server sits.
  6. No offsite backup, relying on RAID instead.
  7. Windows Server licences bought without counting the new processor’s cores.

On that last point, read our Windows Server 2025 licensing guide: cores and CALs before you sign off on the processor.

Checklist before ordering

  • Server roles and the list of planned virtual machines.
  • Tower or rack, depending on the room and whether there is a cabinet.
  • Model generation and processor suited to the intended lifespan.
  • Total memory with free slots to grow.
  • SSDs, RAID level and controller compatible with the chosen hypervisor.
  • Dual hot-swap power supplies included in the quote.
  • UPS with automatic, clean shutdown of the VMs.
  • On-site warranty confirmed for the server’s address.
  • Windows Server licences aligned with the core count.
  • Backup and offsite copy planned from day one.

How we do it

We start with the free initial audit: inventory of existing servers, roles, volumes and criticality. We then propose a reasoned sizing, in Dell or HPE depending on availability and your installed base, with the right warranty. We install the hypervisor, migrate existing servers, configure the management card, the UPS and the backup with an offsite copy, then monitor the hardware 24/7: a weakening disk or power supply raises an alert before it fails. Hardware and licences go through our hardware and licensing offering. For virtual machine backups, we follow the Veeam best practices described in our guides.

See our case studies for comparable projects. To replace a server or plan your first virtualisation, contact us: we start with a free audit and reply within 24 business hours.

Frequently asked questions

Dell or HPE: which server brand should an SMB in Morocco choose?

Both vendors offer equivalent ranges, with a remote management card (iDRAC at Dell, iLO at HPE) and on-site warranty extensions. The right choice mostly depends on model availability, on-site service in your city and the equipment you already run.

Tower or rack server for a small business?

A tower suits an office without a server cabinet: it is quieter and stands on the floor. As soon as you have a cabinet with a firewall, switches and a UPS, a rack server is tidier, better cooled and easier to cable and replace.

Does an SMB server need redundant power supplies?

Yes, as soon as the server carries critical activity. A power supply can fail just like a disk; with two hot-swappable units, the server keeps running. Connect each unit to a different source, ideally the UPS and a second protected line.

Is ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS a Dell or HPE partner?

No. We supply, install and support Dell and HPE servers without an official partnership with these vendors. We recommend the model that fits your needs, whatever the brand.
