Sophos or WatchGuard: which firewall for an SMB

Sophos Firewall or WatchGuard Firebox for an SMB in Morocco: cloud console, MFA, endpoint integration, Xstream and Total Security Suite licences. An honest comparison.

The short answer: Sophos and WatchGuard are more alike than people think. Both primarily target SMBs, both offer a cloud console, and both link the firewall to endpoint protection to respond faster to an attack. The choice therefore depends on what you already have and on your priorities. Your endpoints already run Sophos Endpoint and you are happy with it: Sophos Firewall is the logical next step. You want MFA everywhere, a very readable console and a licence that already includes XDR and basic EDR: WatchGuard is an excellent candidate.

Our position, stated clearly: ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS is a WatchGuard partner in Morocco and a Fortinet integrator in Morocco. We are not a Sophos partner and we do not sell Sophos. This comparison relies on both vendors’ official publications, and we write it without disparagement: Sophos is a serious vendor, and staying with it can be the right decision.

Two similar philosophies

Sophos builds a platform where the firewall (Sophos Firewall, on XGS appliances), endpoint protection (Sophos Endpoint), email and the MDR service share one console, Sophos Fusion, the new name of Sophos Central since July 2026. Its flagship principle is Synchronized Security: firewall and endpoints exchange their status to isolate a compromised device automatically.

WatchGuard follows comparable logic with WatchGuard Cloud, which brings together Firebox appliances, AuthPoint MFA, WiFi access points and endpoint protection. Its Total Security Suite includes ThreatSync XDR, which correlates firewall and endpoint alerts, and EDR Core on endpoints. We detail the range in our WatchGuard Firebox guide for SMBs.

The comparison in one table

Criterion Sophos Firewall (XGS) WatchGuard Firebox Our reading
Range Desktop XGS, 1U and 2U rackmount, virtual, software and cloud versions Firebox T desktop, Firebox M rackmount, FireboxV and Firebox Cloud Equivalent for an SMB
Cloud console Sophos Fusion (formerly Sophos Central), group management and zero-touch deployment WatchGuard Cloud: firewall, MFA, WiFi and endpoints A tie; WatchGuard very readable
Multi-factor authentication One-time-password MFA for the VPN, portals and firewall administration AuthPoint, extended to Windows, Microsoft 365 and cloud apps WatchGuard
Endpoint integration Synchronized Security with Sophos Endpoint, automatic isolation ThreatSync XDR and EDR Core included in the Total Security Suite Whoever already protects your endpoints
Full licence Xstream Protection: sandbox, DNS, NDR Essentials, central orchestration Total Security Suite: APT Blocker, DNSWatch, ThreatSync, EDR Core, 24x7 support Compare like for like
Managed detection and response Sophos MDR, run by Sophos, with automatic response on the firewall Operated by a partner; with us, 24/7 monitoring Vendor-run or local provider, your preference
SD-WAN Built in, failover based on link quality Present, simpler Sophos, without matching FortiGate
Support from ALLSAFE No Yes: supply, installation, 24/7 monitoring —

Administration: two consoles designed for small teams

This is the first criterion for an SMB without a network administrator, and it is also where the two vendors are closest. Sophos Fusion and WatchGuard Cloud let you deploy a new appliance without a technician on site, manage several sites from a browser and view reports without installing a server.

Our experience, with the caveat that it relates to WatchGuard, which we deploy every day: WatchGuard Cloud is particularly readable for a generalist IT manager or a business owner who wants to check the state of protection. On the Sophos side, if your team already has its habits in the console, that comfort matters: changing tools has a real training cost.

Multi-factor authentication: WatchGuard’s strength

Many SMBs now have to roll out MFA because an insurer, a key customer or an audit requires it. AuthPoint is built for this: it protects the Firebox VPN, but also Windows logon, Microsoft 365 and many SaaS applications, with a simple mobile app and management in the same console as the firewall. In our view, it is WatchGuard’s most concrete argument against Sophos. Our MFA rollout guide explains how to do it without blocking your teams.

Endpoint integration: often the deciding factor

Both vendors defend the same idea: a firewall that knows an endpoint is compromised can isolate it before the attack spreads. The condition is the same on both sides: firewall and endpoint protection must come from the same vendor.

  • If your endpoints already run Sophos Endpoint, Sophos Firewall uses that integration immediately. Moving to WatchGuard would lose Synchronized Security, unless you also change endpoint protection.
  • If your endpoints run Kaspersky, Microsoft Defender or another vendor, neither firewall has an integration advantage. WatchGuard’s Total Security Suite does, however, include EDR Core and ThreatSync XDR, which can add a layer of correlation.

To understand what an EDR really brings, read EDR vs antivirus: why antivirus is no longer enough.

Licensing: compare like for like

At Sophos, the appliance includes the base licence; protections are added with Standard Protection (network and web protection) or Xstream Protection, the most complete bundle, which adds the Zero-Day Protection sandbox, DNS protection, NDR Essentials and central orchestration among others. At WatchGuard, the Basic Security Suite covers essential protections, and the Total Security Suite adds APT Blocker, DNSWatch, IntelligentAV, ThreatSync XDR, EDR Core and Gold 24x7 support.

These packages do not overlap exactly. A Sophos quote with Xstream Protection should be compared with a WatchGuard quote with the Total Security Suite, over the same term, hardware included. Comparing a full licence with an entry licence distorts the whole reasoning.

Sizing: compare the right throughput figures

Both vendors publish several throughput figures per model, and the highest, raw firewall throughput without inspection, is of almost no interest to an SMB. What matters is throughput with all protections enabled and with encrypted traffic inspection, since most internet traffic now runs over HTTPS. At WatchGuard, these are the “UTM” and “HTTPS” figures on the datasheet; at Sophos, the threat protection and TLS inspection figures. Compare those values with the sum of your internet links, backup included, with headroom for growth, remote work and internal traffic if you segment endpoints, servers and guest WiFi. A model that is just enough today is likely to saturate quickly.

Moving from Sophos to WatchGuard: how the migration works

There is no reliable automatic conversion from a Sophos firewall to a Firebox, and that is just as well: the migration is a chance to clean up. We start from the Sophos configuration export and the logs, to see which rules are really used. Objects, server publications and VPN tunnels are then recreated in WatchGuard’s logic, with clean segmentation. Remote workers receive the new VPN client and enrol in AuthPoint before cut-over. The new Firebox is configured and tested off production, then installed on an evening or weekend, with the old appliance ready to be reconnected during acceptance testing. If your device is an old Sophos UTM, the timing is constrained by end of life: see our dedicated article.

When to stay with Sophos, when to move to WatchGuard

Your situation Our recommendation
Recent Sophos firewall, endpoints on Sophos Endpoint, satisfied Stay with Sophos, with a Sophos partner
You want a vendor-run MDR integrated with the firewall Sophos makes sense
Sophos UTM at end of life, to be replaced anyway Compare Sophos Firewall, WatchGuard and FortiGate, see Sophos UTM end of life
MFA to roll out on VPN, Windows and Microsoft 365 WatchGuard with AuthPoint
Single site, no network team, need for a local provider WatchGuard with ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS
Several sites, demanding SD-WAN, switches and WiFi to renew Rather FortiGate, see Sophos Firewall or FortiGate

Changing vendor rarely makes sense mid-contract. It is usually decided at a natural moment: hardware end of life, licence renewal, office move, or a new need the current setup covers poorly.

Mistakes we see in these decisions

  1. Choosing on the datasheet instead of throughput with all protections enabled. On a Firebox, the UTM and HTTPS figures are what count, as explained in Firebox T125, T145, T185 or M295.
  2. Changing firewall without looking at endpoints, and losing an integration that worked.
  3. Buying the entry licence to lower the quote, then finding the sandbox or DNS filtering is missing.
  4. Forgetting MFA on the VPN, attackers’ favourite entry point.
  5. Appointing nobody to read alerts and track renewals.

Checklist before deciding

  • Current endpoint protection and its renewal date.
  • Number of sites, internet links and remote workers.
  • MFA needs beyond the VPN: Windows, Microsoft 365, cloud applications.
  • Throughput with inspection of the proposed models.
  • Comparable licences in both quotes, over the same term.
  • A person or provider in charge of operations and monitoring.

How we work

We start with a free initial audit: current configuration, endpoint protection, real traffic, remote access. If your Sophos installation suits you and the endpoint integration matters, we will advise you to keep it and point you to a Sophos partner. If WatchGuard or FortiGate better meets your needs, we supply hardware and licences, with or without installation, migrate and review the rules, deploy AuthPoint and the VPN, then monitor the firewall 24/7, with critical incidents handled in under 15 minutes. This work is part of our cybersecurity in Morocco offering; to go further, read FortiGate or WatchGuard and our business firewall buying guide.

Frequently asked questions

Sophos or WatchGuard: which is easier to manage?

Both were designed for small teams, with a cloud console: Sophos Fusion (formerly Sophos Central) and WatchGuard Cloud. In our deployments, WatchGuard Cloud is particularly readable for a generalist IT manager. If your team already knows Sophos, habit matters as much as ergonomics.

Which handles multi-factor authentication better?

WatchGuard offers AuthPoint, an MFA that extends to the VPN, Windows logon, Microsoft 365 and many cloud applications, in the same console as the firewall. It is one of its strengths for an SMB that has to roll out MFA everywhere.

What does each vendor's full licence include?

At Sophos, the Xstream Protection bundle combines network and web protection, the Zero-Day Protection sandbox, DNS protection, central orchestration and enhanced support. At WatchGuard, the Total Security Suite adds APT Blocker for unknown files, DNSWatch DNS filtering, ThreatSync XDR and EDR Core on endpoints to the basic protections.

Should you leave Sophos for WatchGuard?

Not necessarily. If your Sophos firewall is recent, your endpoints run Sophos Endpoint and you are happy, staying is often the right choice. A change makes more sense at renewal, at an end of life such as Sophos UTM's, or when a need is poorly covered.

Does ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS sell Sophos?

No. We are a WatchGuard and Fortinet partner, not a Sophos partner. This comparison relies on both vendors' official publications. For a Sophos project, contact a Sophos partner.
