Business antivirus in Morocco: how to choose (antivirus, EDR or XDR, Defender, Kaspersky…)

Antivirus, EDR or XDR, Microsoft Defender for Business, Kaspersky, WatchGuard, Fortinet and others: console, monitoring and criteria to choose your business antivirus.

The short answer: for a business, the right “antivirus” is no longer just an antivirus. Choose a solution that ticks four boxes. A central console showing the whole fleet and its alerts. EDR, able to detect abnormal behaviour and isolate a device. Coverage of all your systems: Windows, macOS, servers and ideally smartphones. And above all alert monitoring, in-house or by a provider. If you are already on Microsoft 365 Business Premium, Microsoft Defender for Business is included and should be looked at first. Otherwise, compare Kaspersky, WatchGuard, Fortinet and the other market players on these criteria, not on the brand name.

At ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS, we deploy and monitor these solutions for businesses in Morocco, as a Kaspersky Registered B2B Partner, a Microsoft partner, and a WatchGuard and Fortinet partner. The features quoted here come from the vendors’ documentation; we publish neither prices nor “detection” rankings, which vary between tests and over time.

Antivirus, EDR, XDR: what are we talking about?

Antivirus (EPP) EDR XDR
What it does Blocks known malicious files and sites, with some behavioural analysis Continuously watches processes, connections and files; detects an abnormal chain of actions Correlates endpoints, firewall, email, identities, cloud
Against an unknown attack Limited Detects the behaviour, even with no signature Sees the attack move from one system to another
Response File quarantine Device isolation, process termination, root cause analysis Coordinated, sometimes automated responses
Who runs it Little operation needed Someone must read and handle alerts A security team or a SOC
For whom Very small organisations with no sensitive data Any SMB exposed to ransomware or phishing More mature businesses, or through a managed service

Current solutions often combine the first two levels in a single agent. So the real question is not “antivirus or EDR”, but “which edition, and who monitors it”. We explain this difference in EDR or antivirus: why antivirus is no longer enough.

The criteria that really matter

  1. A central console: see at a glance which devices are protected, up to date or under threat. Without it, an unprotected device goes unnoticed for months.
  2. EDR and isolation: being able to cut a device off the network remotely while keeping control of it for analysis.
  3. Coverage: Windows, macOS, Linux, physical and virtual servers, Android, iPhone. Check every system in your fleet.
  4. Ransomware protection: detection of mass encryption, rollback of modified files where the vendor offers it.
  5. Vulnerability and patch management: many intrusions come through software that was never updated.
  6. Application, web and device control, especially USB drives.
  7. Agent protection: uninstall password, tamper protection.
  8. Integration with your firewall, email and directory.
  9. Console type: cloud or on premises, depending on your data constraints.
  10. Monitoring: who receives the alert at 2 a.m., and how quickly it is handled.

Microsoft Defender for Business: often already paid for

Microsoft Defender for Business is Microsoft’s endpoint security solution for SMBs. According to Microsoft’s documentation, it is designed for businesses with up to 300 users, is available as a standalone subscription and is included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium. It brings the features of Defender for Endpoint Plan 1 and some of Plan 2:

  • next-generation protection and attack surface reduction;
  • optimised EDR, automated investigation and remediation, automatic attack disruption;
  • vulnerability management (core capabilities);
  • support for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android;
  • monthly security summary report.

One point to watch: protecting Windows and Linux servers requires additional licences. Defender for Business integrates naturally with Intune and Entra ID, which makes it a consistent choice if your business already lives in Microsoft 365. Do not confuse it with Microsoft Defender Antivirus, built into Windows at no extra cost, which protects each device in isolation with no business console. To tighten the rest of your Microsoft environment, see secure Microsoft 365 in 10 settings.

Kaspersky Next: one console for workstations, servers and mobiles

Kaspersky’s business range is now called Kaspersky Next. For an SMB, the choice is mainly between EDR Foundations (endpoint protection, application, web and device control, vulnerability assessment, root cause analysis) and EDR Optimum, which according to Kaspersky adds essential EDR features, patch and encryption management and Microsoft 365 protection. The console comes in a cloud or on-premises version, and Android and iPhone smartphones are managed from the same console. Large organisations with a SOC tend to look at XDR Expert instead.

Its appeal: a single tool for computers, servers and mobiles, with a good level of control. To check: your group’s or your clients’ supplier policy, as some exclude this vendor. We detail the editions in Kaspersky for business: which edition to choose.

WatchGuard and Fortinet: the ecosystem advantage

If your firewall is a WatchGuard Firebox or a FortiGate, endpoint protection from the same vendor is worth considering. At WatchGuard, the Endpoint Security range (including the EPDR offering, sold as Endpoint Security 360) combines protection and EDR, with a service that only lets applications recognised as trustworthy run, all managed from WatchGuard Cloud; ThreatSync correlates detections from endpoints and the firewall. At Fortinet, FortiEDR detects and blocks malicious behaviour in real time, and FortiClient connects endpoints to the FortiGate’s Security Fabric. The shared benefit: what the endpoint detects can be blocked at network level, and vice versa.

The other market players

Other well-known vendors offer endpoint protection platforms with EDR, including ESET (PROTECT range), Bitdefender (GravityZone), Sophos (Intercept X), SentinelOne (Singularity), CrowdStrike (Falcon) and Trend Micro. They all have real strengths. We do not rank them: independent test results change from one round to the next, and for an SMB the difference lies far more in tuning, fleet coverage and monitoring than in a few detection points. Simply require the same criteria as above, and a demonstration of the console.

Which solution for your situation

Your situation First option to consider
Already on Microsoft 365 Business Premium Microsoft Defender for Business, with Intune
Mixed fleet of workstations, servers and smartphones, need for a single console Kaspersky Next EDR Optimum
WatchGuard firewall in place WatchGuard Endpoint Security and ThreatSync
FortiGate firewall in place FortiClient and FortiEDR in the Security Fabric
Very small office, no sensitive data A base edition with a cloud console
Sensitive data, no in-house resource to monitor A solution with EDR, monitored 24/7 by a provider

Monitoring: the forgotten criterion

The best EDR on the market is useless if its alerts land in a mailbox nobody reads. Ransomware attacks often unfold at night or at weekends, precisely because nobody is watching. Before signing, ask: who receives the alert, who decides to isolate the device, and how quickly? With us, alerts feed into 24/7 monitoring, and a critical incident is handled in under 15 minutes. We explain how it works in managed EDR and 24/7 monitoring.

Switching antivirus without disrupting work

Replacing a security solution is often a source of worry, wrongly so. The switchover is prepared in four steps:

  1. A complete inventory: we compare the device lists from the directory, the network and the old console, so that no workstation is left out.
  2. Remote deployment of the new agent, in waves, starting with a pilot group, with a clean uninstall of the old product.
  3. Observation mode: the new rules first run without blocking, long enough to identify legitimate business software and tune exclusions as tightly as possible.
  4. Gradual activation of automated responses, then a final check in the console: every device must report in, up to date and protected.

Servers are handled separately, in a window agreed with you, using the exclusions recommended by the vendors of your databases and your backup software. Users keep working throughout, and the old and new protections never run side by side on the same device for longer than the switchover itself.

Mistakes we fix

  1. A “free” or consumer antivirus on company devices, with no console.
  2. Two antivirus products on the same machine, slowing it down and cancelling each other out.
  3. Forgotten servers, even though they are ransomware’s main target.
  4. Expired licences that nobody noticed.
  5. Overly broad exclusions, added one day to “make” some software work and never removed.
  6. Users with admin rights on their devices, able to switch protection off.
  7. An EDR bought but never monitored.
  8. Relying on antivirus alone, without immutable backup, MFA or phishing awareness.

Checklist before choosing

  • Inventory: Windows, macOS and Linux workstations, servers, smartphones.
  • Existing licences: Microsoft 365, Kaspersky, other.
  • Firewall in place: WatchGuard, Fortinet, other.
  • Sensitive data and requirements from a group, a client or law 09-08.
  • Cloud or on-premises console.
  • Need for EDR, patch management, encryption.
  • Who monitors alerts, and how quickly they are handled.
  • Plan for switching over from the current solution.

How we do it

We start with a free audit: fleet inventory, current protection, uncovered devices, existing licences and risk exposure. We then recommend the most suitable solution, starting from what you already own, supply the licences with or without installation, and deploy the agent remotely while cleanly removing the old product. Policies are adapted to your business, the agent is protected, and the console is connected to our 24/7 monitoring, with critical incidents handled in under 15 minutes. To round things off, consider a Zero Trust approach and rolling out MFA.

Frequently asked questions

Is the antivirus built into Windows enough for a business?

Microsoft Defender Antivirus, built into Windows, provides good baseline protection, but each device is managed on its own: no overall view, no EDR, no central alerting. A business needs a console that manages the whole fleet, such as Microsoft Defender for Business or a third-party solution, and someone monitoring the alerts.

What is the difference between antivirus, EDR and XDR?

Antivirus mostly blocks known threats. EDR monitors the behaviour of each device, reconstructs an attack and lets you isolate a machine. XDR also correlates signals from several sources: endpoints, firewall, email, identities. For an SMB, the priority is a monitored EDR; XDR comes next.

Microsoft Defender for Business or Kaspersky: which one?

Defender for Business is included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium, designed for businesses with up to 300 users and integrated with Intune and Entra ID. Kaspersky Next brings workstations, servers and mobiles into a single console, cloud or on premises. The right choice depends on your current licences, your environment and any group constraints.

Do servers need antivirus too?

Yes. File, application and backup servers are prime ransomware targets. They need a specific server licence and well-tuned exclusions for databases and backup software, so they are protected without being slowed down.

How do we replace our current antivirus safely?

The new agent is deployed remotely, the old product is cleanly uninstalled to avoid two antivirus products on the same device, the console is checked to confirm every device reports in, then automated responses are enabled gradually. All of this happens without interrupting users’ work.
