Sophos Firewall or FortiGate: a comparison for SMBs
Sophos Firewall (XGS) or FortiGate for an SMB in Morocco: administration, cloud console, SD-WAN, endpoint integration, licences and migration. An honest comparison.

The short answer: for an SMB, Sophos Firewall and FortiGate both provide serious protection, and the choice is not made on the list of security features, which is very similar on both sides. It is made on your environment. If your endpoints already run Sophos Endpoint, Sophos Firewall has a real advantage: the two products exchange information and automatically isolate a compromised computer. If you have several sites, several internet links, IP telephony and switches or WiFi to renew, FortiGate takes the lead thanks to its SD-WAN and network ecosystem.
Our position, transparently: ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS is a Fortinet integrator in Morocco and a WatchGuard partner in Morocco. We are not a Sophos partner and we do not sell Sophos. We therefore wrote this comparison from the two vendors’ official publications only, and we say it plainly: if you already have Sophos and are happy with it, the right choice may be to stay.
The two products in a few lines
Sophos Firewall runs the SFOS operating system on the XGS appliance range (desktop, 1U and 2U rackmount models), as well as virtual, software and cloud versions. It is managed locally or from Sophos’s cloud console, Sophos Fusion, the new name of Sophos Central since July 2026. Sophos highlights its Xstream architecture, with dedicated processors that accelerate part of the traffic, and integration with its other products: endpoint protection, email, MDR.
FortiGate runs FortiOS, on a range from small branch appliances to data-centre equipment, with virtual and cloud versions. It is managed locally, from FortiGate Cloud or from FortiManager for large estates. Fortinet highlights its in-house security processors, built-in SD-WAN and its Security Fabric, which links the firewall to switches, WiFi access points and endpoints.
The comparison in one table
| Criterion | Sophos Firewall | FortiGate | Our reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Security features (IPS, web filtering, sandbox, TLS inspection) | Complete with the Xstream Protection licence | Complete with the right bundle | A tie for an SMB |
| Endpoint integration | Synchronized Security with Sophos Endpoint: automatic isolation of a compromised computer | Security Fabric with FortiClient and Fortinet endpoint products | Sophos, if the estate already runs Sophos |
| Response to threat feeds | Active Threat Response: blocks a device flagged by Sophos, by MDR or by third-party feeds | FortiGuard feeds and Security Fabric automation | A tie |
| SD-WAN and multi-site | Built in, tunnel orchestration, failover based on link quality | Built in, very fine-grained, a market reference | FortiGate |
| Network ecosystem | Switches, WiFi and RED devices managed from Sophos Fusion | FortiSwitch and FortiAP managed directly from the firewall | FortiGate |
| Cloud console | Sophos Fusion, group management and zero-touch deployment included according to Sophos | FortiGate Cloud; FortiManager for large estates | A tie, a matter of habit |
| Remote access without VPN (ZTNA) | Built-in ZTNA gateway, included with Sophos Workspace Protection | ZTNA built into FortiOS, with FortiClient | Compare for your use case |
| Licensing | Base licence included with the appliance, then Standard Protection or Xstream Protection | FortiCare, then UTP, ATP or Enterprise Protection bundles | Compare like for like |
| Support from ALLSAFE | No, we do not deploy Sophos | Yes: supply, installation, 24/7 monitoring | — |
This table does not replace an analysis of your network. A “FortiGate” advantage on SD-WAN does not count if you have one site and one link.
Security: no winner for an SMB
Both vendors cover everything you expect from a next-generation firewall: application control, intrusion prevention, stream antivirus, web and DNS filtering, sandbox analysis of unknown files, encrypted traffic inspection. At Sophos, the most advanced features (the “Zero-Day Protection” sandbox, DNS protection, NDR Essentials, response to third-party threat feeds) are reserved for the Xstream Protection bundle; the Standard Protection licence covers network and web protection. At Fortinet, the logic is the same with the UTP, ATP or Enterprise Protection bundles, which we detail in FortiGate for SMBs: which model to choose.
In practice, we see far more incidents caused by weak configuration than by the brand of the box: TLS inspection disabled, overly broad rules, administration exposed to the internet, firmware never updated. The settings that matter are the same everywhere; we list them for FortiGate in 10 security settings after installing a FortiGate.
Sophos’s strong argument: the endpoint link
This is where Sophos really stands out. When the firewall and the endpoints are both Sophos, they share their health status. If Sophos Endpoint detects a threat on a computer, the firewall can isolate that machine from the rest of the network while it is cleaned, without human intervention. Sophos extends this to its MDR analysts, who can block a device without creating a rule by hand.
Fortinet offers comparable logic with the Security Fabric and FortiClient, but the benefit has the same condition: the firewall and the endpoints must come from the same vendor. In practice, if your estate is already protected by Sophos and you are happy with it, replacing your Sophos firewall with a FortiGate would lose that integration. That is a legitimate argument for staying with Sophos. Conversely, if your endpoints run Kaspersky or Microsoft Defender, that advantage disappears and the choice rests on other criteria. We cover endpoint protection in EDR vs antivirus.
FortiGate’s strong argument: the network
For an organisation with a head office and branches, FortiGate remains our reference. Its SD-WAN is built in without a separate licence; it spreads traffic between fibre and 4G backup according to measured link quality, prioritises voice and business applications, and centralises site-to-site tunnels. We explain how it works in FortiGate SD-WAN for multi-site networks. Sophos Firewall also offers built-in SD-WAN with failover based on latency, jitter and loss, and point-and-click tunnel orchestration: it is serious, but in our view less deep.
The other strength is the ecosystem: FortiSwitch switches and FortiAP access points are managed from the FortiGate itself, which simplifies a complete network refresh. Sophos also manages switches and WiFi from its cloud console, with a different approach.
Day-to-day administration
On this point, both products require a minimum of networking skill. FortiOS is very granular: everything can be tuned, from dynamic routing to per-application security profiles, which is an asset for a technical team or a managed service provider, and a more intimidating interface for a business owner. Sophos Firewall organises its rules by zones and emphasises summary dashboards and central management in Sophos Fusion. Either way, the decisive question is not ergonomics but who will run the appliance: who applies firmware updates, reviews rules, reads logs and tracks renewals. A well-run firewall protects better than a richer one left unattended.
Migration: possible in both directions
Both vendors make it easy for customers to come from the competitor. Sophos Firewall Config Studio accepts a FortiGate configuration backup and flags items to redo by hand. Fortinet publishes FortiConverter, whose documentation lists Sophos configurations among supported sources. These tools save time, but they do not review your rules for you: Sophos organises rules by zones, and an automatic conversion always needs line-by-line checking. If you are still on Sophos UTM, the question is different: read Sophos UTM end of life: what to replace it with.
Which firewall for which situation
| Your situation | Our recommendation |
|---|---|
| Endpoints already on Sophos Endpoint, recent Sophos firewall, satisfied | Stay on Sophos Firewall, with a Sophos partner |
| Single site, no network team, MFA needed everywhere | Rather WatchGuard, see FortiGate or WatchGuard |
| Head office and branches, several carrier links, IP telephony | FortiGate |
| Switches and WiFi to renew at the same time | FortiGate |
| Endpoints on Kaspersky or Microsoft Defender | Open choice: FortiGate or WatchGuard depending on the network |
| Need for a local provider who installs and monitors | FortiGate or WatchGuard with ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS |
Mistakes we see in these comparisons
- Comparing datasheets instead of throughput with all protections enabled.
- Comparing a full licence on one side with an entry licence on the other: Xstream Protection against FortiCare alone, or the reverse.
- Switching vendor for a promotion and losing a useful endpoint integration.
- Forgetting who will run the appliance: a feature-rich firewall that is poorly operated protects poorly.
- Underestimating migration effort: rule review, VPN, MFA, training.
Checklist before deciding
- Inventory of sites, internet links and remote workers.
- Current endpoint protection: Sophos, Kaspersky, Defender or other.
- Throughput with inspection of each proposed model, compared with your links.
- Equivalent licence level in both quotes, over the same term.
- Switch and WiFi needs over the coming years.
- A provider able to install, monitor and come on site.
- Renewal date of current licences.
How we work
We start with a free initial audit: sites, links, real traffic, endpoint protection, current firewall configuration. If your Sophos installation serves you well and the endpoint integration matters, we will tell you so and point you to a Sophos partner. If FortiGate is a better fit, we supply hardware and licences, with or without installation, migrate and review the rules, set up VPN with MFA and, where needed, SD-WAN. The firewall can then be covered by our 24/7 monitoring, with critical incidents handled in under 15 minutes. All this is part of our cybersecurity in Morocco offering, and our business firewall buying guide complements this comparison.

Frequently asked questions
Sophos Firewall or FortiGate: which protects an SMB better?
For an SMB, neither clearly stands out. Both offer intrusion prevention, web filtering, sandbox analysis of unknown files, encrypted traffic inspection and automatic response to threat feeds. Differences in protection come mainly from configuration, sizing and updates.
What is Sophos Firewall's main advantage?
Its integration with Sophos endpoint protection: the firewall and Sophos Endpoint exchange information (Synchronized Security) and a compromised computer can be isolated automatically. If your estate is already protected by Sophos, that is a real argument for staying with the vendor.
What is FortiGate's main advantage?
Network depth: built-in, very fine-grained SD-WAN, management of FortiSwitch switches and FortiAP access points from the firewall, and a range from small branch appliances to data-centre equipment. That is often decisive for a multi-site organisation.
Can you migrate from FortiGate to Sophos Firewall, or the other way round?
Yes. Sophos Firewall Config Studio accepts a FortiGate configuration import, and Fortinet publishes FortiConverter, which lists Sophos configurations among its sources. Either way, the result is reviewed rule by rule before going live.
Does ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS install Sophos Firewall?
No. We are a Fortinet and WatchGuard partner, not a Sophos partner. This comparison relies on official Sophos and Fortinet publications. If you already run Sophos and are happy with it, staying can be the right choice; a Sophos partner will support you.
