Odoo vs Dolibarr: which ERP should a Moroccan SMB choose?
Odoo vs Dolibarr in Morocco: comparison by company profile (trading, services, manufacturing), editions, hosting and when to switch ERP.

Odoo or Dolibarr? The short answer: Dolibarr suits small businesses with simple processes that want a free ERP that is quick to learn and easy to host; Odoo becomes the better choice once workflows multiply: several warehouses, manufacturing, e-commerce, several companies, automation between departments. Both tools produce quotes and invoices; what separates them is your business profile, the edition you choose and how the ERP will be hosted and maintained.
We integrate and host both for SMBs in Morocco, without being an official partner of either. Here is the grid we use to decide.
Two different philosophies
Dolibarr is free software distributed under a single licence, the GNU GPL v3 or later, backed by an association and a community. It covers CRM and sales (proposals, orders, contracts), invoicing and double-entry accounting, products and stock, purchasing, manufacturing (MRP module), projects, expense reports and leave, point of sale and e-mailing. Add-ons are available on DoliStore, its official marketplace. It runs on a workstation, on a server or as SaaS.
Odoo is published by Odoo SA and comes in two editions: Community, open source under LGPL v3, and Enterprise, for subscribers, which adds apps, features and vendor support. Odoo is built as a suite of integrated apps (sales, purchasing, inventory, accounting, manufacturing, website and e-commerce, HR, projects…) sharing one database.
In practice: Dolibarr favours simplicity and autonomy, Odoo favours functional coverage and integration between departments.
Odoo vs Dolibarr for a Moroccan SMB
| Criterion | Dolibarr | Odoo |
|---|---|---|
| Licence | Free, GPL v3+ | Community free (LGPL v3), Enterprise by subscription |
| Learning curve | Plain interface, quick to learn | Richer, needs scoping and training per role |
| Scope | Sales, invoices, stock, purchasing, MRP, projects, basic HR, POS | Integrated suite: sales, multi-warehouse inventory, manufacturing, e-commerce, HR, accounting… |
| Customisation | DoliStore modules, PHP development | Studio (depending on plan), Python modules on Odoo.sh or your own server |
| Hosting | On premises, dedicated server or SaaS | Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or on premises (depending on plan) |
| Morocco localisation | Taxes and legal mentions configured with your accountant | Moroccan localisation package, to be validated with your accountant |
| Best fit | Micro and small businesses with stable workflows | Growing SMBs, multi-site or multi-activity |
Either way, invoice compliance (VAT, ICE, IF, RC…) does not come from installation but from configuration, which we cover in our guide Odoo: what to configure before the first invoice.
Which ERP for your type of business?
Trading and distribution
If you buy and resell goods, stock is the heart of the matter. With a single warehouse, a reasonable catalogue and business customers, Dolibarr handles quotes, orders, shipments and invoices very well. As soon as you have several warehouses, automatic replenishment, lot or serial numbers, an online shop or field sales reps, Odoo takes the lead: its Sales, Purchase, Inventory and eCommerce apps share the same data with no re-keying. This is the most common case in retail and distribution.
Service companies
Firms, agencies, engineering offices, maintenance companies: what matters is customer follow-up, quotes, contracts, projects, timesheets and invoicing. Dolibarr covers this with its proposals, contracts, projects and timesheet modules, often enough for a small team. Odoo becomes interesting if you want to tightly link time spent, field interventions, recurring subscriptions and invoicing, or plan a customer portal.
Manufacturing
Both tools include a manufacturing module. For a workshop assembling from simple bills of materials, Dolibarr can be enough. For production with routings, work centres, quality control, maintenance and planning, Odoo is better equipped with its Manufacturing, Quality and Maintenance apps. In manufacturing and logistics, it is the option we recommend most often after a scoping workshop.
Editions and plans: what to know before choosing
For Odoo, the vendor’s pricing page lists three plans: One App Free (a single app, unlimited users, hosted on Odoo Online), Standard (all apps, Odoo Online hosting, no Studio, no external API, no multi-company) and Custom (all apps, Studio, multi-company, external API, and a choice of hosting between Odoo Online, Odoo.sh and your own server). Custom-developed modules cannot be installed on Odoo Online: they require Odoo.sh or on-premises hosting. Always check current conditions on odoo.com, as they change.
For Dolibarr, there is no paid edition: every feature is in the free software. Costs come from hosting, any DoliStore modules, configuration, training and maintenance.
So compare the total cost over several years (subscriptions, hosting, integration, maintenance, changes), not just the initial licence.
Hosting: as important a decision as the software
An ERP holds your invoicing, customers and stock. Where it runs, who backs it up and who updates it matter as much as its features. Dolibarr is easy to host on a dedicated server or VPS, or as SaaS. Odoo offers three official hosting modes, which we compare in our guide Odoo hosting: Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or dedicated server. In every case, insist on a tested off-site backup, named accounts and a test environment.
When should you move from Dolibarr to Odoo?
Dolibarr is not a “budget” stage: many companies use it for the long term. Signals that justify a switch:
- teams re-key the same information into several tools or Excel files;
- you open a second warehouse, a second company or an online shop;
- production needs planning, quality control or lot traceability;
- add-on modules pile up and updates become risky;
- management can no longer get its indicators without manual reworking.
The switch needs preparation: data cleaning and migration, opening balances validated by your accountant, a go-live at the start of a financial year or month, and a short period of parallel running.
Common mistakes
- Choosing from a demo rather than from your real processes, written down before looking at tools.
- Picking the most complete ERP “for later” and never finishing the configuration.
- Underestimating data migration: an ERP fed with a raw file inherits its duplicates.
- Over-customising: every custom development complicates upgrades.
- Forgetting hosting and backup, or keeping the only copy on the same server as the ERP.
- Not involving your accountant before the first invoice.
Checklist for choosing between Odoo and Dolibarr
- Your key processes are written down: sales, purchasing, stock, manufacturing, invoicing, collections.
- The number of users, sites, warehouses and companies is known.
- Needs for the next two or three years are listed (e-commerce, new activity, subsidiary).
- The target edition and plan are checked on the vendor’s website.
- The hosting model, backup and maintenance are decided.
- The total cost over several years is compared on the same scope.
- Your accountant has validated taxes, legal mentions and accounting exports.
How we do it
We start with a scoping workshop: your workflows, volumes, constraints and plans. We recommend Odoo or Dolibarr and explain why, then configure the chosen solution, migrate your data, train each role and have a pilot invoice reviewed by your accountant. We then host the ERP securely, with off-site backups and 24/7 monitoring. We are not an official partner of either vendor: our recommendation depends on your business, not on a sales target.

Frequently asked questions
Is Dolibarr suitable for an SMB in Morocco?
Yes, for a small business with simple processes: quotes, invoices, customer follow-up, basic stock. Dolibarr is free software under the GPL licence, installable on your own server or used as SaaS. Tax settings and legal mentions must be validated by your chartered accountant.
What is the difference between Odoo Community and Odoo Enterprise?
Odoo Community is the open source version, licensed under LGPL v3, that you install yourself. Odoo Enterprise adds subscriber-only apps and features with vendor support, and can be hosted on Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or your own server depending on the plan.
Can we move from Dolibarr to Odoo later?
Yes. Customers, suppliers, products and price lists can be exported, cleaned and re-imported. Opening balances and accounting history need the most care: the cut-over date is set with your chartered accountant, ideally at the start of a financial year.
Is ALLSAFE SOLUTIONS an official Odoo or Dolibarr partner?
No. We integrate, host and maintain Odoo and Dolibarr for our clients without official partner status with either vendor. That lets us recommend the tool that fits best rather than the one we would have to sell.
